Velvet Cafe

As we were driving along 4th Street NE we came across this little cafe that we decided to check out. You probably wouldn’t even know it is there unless you live nearby.

The Interior

There is limited seating inside which is alright since they have a patio along the one side of the building. They also have a couple fridges located on the right when you walk in that has a variety of different food options that you can buy. They have frozen Coco Brooks pizzas that you can also get. On the left there is a bar with the kitchen located behind.

The Drinks

After looking over their menu and asking a couple different questions about a couple of the drinks we decided on a two.

I ordered a latte for $5.00 and it was good. The flavour was good and you could tell that it had a good smooth texture.

My daughter and wife got a Local Lilac Fizzy Lemonade for $4.95 and it was refreshing and amazing. It was made with real lemon juice and lemon peel which was in big pieces. It is always a bonus when you are drinking a beverage with lemon peel and it doesn’t fit up the straw. The only thing we made a comment on was instead of using Club Soda, maybe try and make it with San Pelligreno, then there is less of a flavour and the other flavours can shine more.

The Service

The staff were friendly and they had a bunch of different options on the menu. The best thing my daughter seen is that they give students 15% off every purchase, you just have to show your ID. We thought that was really cool thing for a business to do.

The Hours

Monday to Friday – 8:00am to 5:30pm

Saturday – 9:00am to 4:00pm

Sunday – Closed

Parking

There is a small lot in front of the building, but there is a bunch of street parking on either side.

Last Words

We would definitely head back to this little cafe and try some of their menu options since everything sounded really delicious. If you are a student, make sure you head over and get caffeinated, just check that you have your ID so you can get 15% off your purchase.

Ill-Fated Kustoms

Recently we received a message from one of our followers to check out this really cool Motocycle shop and have a coffee. The location themselves have been there for a year, but they only recently started doing coffee in March 2020.

The Interior

When you first walk in you are in a motorcycle shop, there is helmets, clothing, hats, vests, everything you would need if you owned a motorcycle. There is a wide opening at the back where you can look into the shop and see a bunch of motorcycles that they are working on. On the far left of the main store there is a small bar with seating for six and their coffee machine.

The Drinks

They have a limited menu right now, but they are working on more options.

I ordered a Latte for $3.50 which was very good. I could tell that they made it with a darker roast which is fine, but I prefer a little lighter of a roast when it comes to my espresso drinks.

My wife ordered a Hot Chocolate for $3.50 which was good. They used Monin Syrup which has a good chocolate flavour. Hopefully in the future they look at doing something a little more artisan.

My daughter ordered a Caramel Latte for $3.50 and it was stronger than she liked but she was happy that she could taste the caramel. Her fear is that she cannot taste the flavour in some of the flavoured lattes. But she said it was good.

The Service

The staff were very friendly and welcoming into the shop. She gave us a quick tour and showed us into the garage and if it wasn’t COVID you would be able to sit in the garage and enjoy your beverage and watch them work on all the motorcycles they had.

The Hours

Tuesday to Friday – 10:00am to 6:00pm

Saturday – 10:00am to 3:00pm

Parking

There is a small limited space lot in front of the shop and then there is parking along the street.

We were pleased to see that all their proceeds were going to various anti-racism organizations. They will choose one cause and decide to donate all sales to that cause. You should definitely head over to Ill-Fated Kustoms and check them out. We hope that they decide to participate in YYC Hot Chocolate Fest this coming year.

Black Mountain Roasters

On our way back to Calgary we stopped in Drumheller at Black Mountain Roasters. It is located on Main Street in Downtown Drumheller. It is where there is a bunch of dinosaurs just roaming around causing scenes everywhere they go.

The Interior

It is located upstairs in a building where they hav their roaster in the open so people can see it. There is a bunch of art shown on the walls and there is some seating that overlooks Main Street. I guess you want to see when the dinosaurs jump on your vehicle. They have some of their roasted coffee for sale and they all have dinosaur related names and the one they were using for their espresso is Albertosaurus, which we thought was clever.

The Drinks

After looking over their Cretaceous menu we decided on a couple beverages.

I ordered an Iced Latte made with Albertosaurus for $5.35. It was good with a very bold and strong taste to it. We later found out that the Albertosaurus is their darkest roast they have and I prefer a lighter roast for my espresso based drinks.

My wife ordered an Iced London Fog for $5.65 and it was good. Unfortunately she could taste that they used a Lavender sweetener, when we believed they would use a Vanilla. The Lavender is very overpowering and it was stronger than she liked.

My daughter ordered an Iced Mint Hot Chocolate for $5.65 and it was good. It had a good amount of mint, but she was said that it was just milk mixed with Monin Chocolate Syrup. She felt that it could have been done so much better.

The Food

In their display case they had a piece of Turtle Cheesecake for $6.25 and we decided to try it. It was really good and a perfect size for a snack. You could really taste the aspects of a turtle which is always a bonus.

The Service

The staff were friendly and very nice. They said we could enjoy our beverages inside if we wanted to, but we opted to be sit out on their patio so we could potentially scare the dinosaurs away if needed.

The Hours

Tuesday to Friday – 8:00am to 5:00pm

Saturday – 9:00am to 3:00pm

Sunday – 10:00am to 3:00pm

Parking

There is parking located all along the street. As an added bonus it is all free parking.

If you want to try a delicious Cretaceous beverage, head to Drumheller and check this place out. Plus you never know where the dinosaurs are lurking, you might just see one from their window.
