Our Top Nine For 2018

As 2018 came to an end, we sat back and reflected where we had been this past year and which coffee houses stood out to us. There is still a couple that were on our list from last year that we still visit on a regular basis, Euphoria Café and Societe Coffee Lounge.

When I look back at where we went this past year, we went to a total of 66 different places, located in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, and everywhere in between. There are still more out there that we haven’t been to yet, and we are currently putting together our plan for 2019.

This past year I consumed around 600 beverages in some form or another, from lattes, pour overs, cold brew to even having a Poach Pear Hot Chocolate at Bel Café in Kits (my first hot chocolate ever), and a Black Sesame tea latte at the other Bel Café in downtown Vancouver.

In the month of February my wife and my daughter tried 25 different hot chocolates in 28 days for the YYC Hot Chocolate Fest in Calgary that supports Meals on Wheels. There were some pretty wild hot chocolates this past year, we can’t wait to see what the baristas come up with this year.

Also during 2018 we started visiting and blogging about some outstanding independent restaurants. In 2019 we plan on going to more, so stay tuned for that. There are a ton of great places out there just waiting to be found.

Calgary

These 3 cafés open in Calgary during 2018.

Sought x Found

Kitty and Caleb, two of the nicest people I have met and their dedication to coffee and their customers is second to none. Since day one, they ensure that the beverage you order is perfect.

A few weeks ago, I was informed by a colleague of my daughters about a new coffee shop that opened on Centre Street, just before you head downtown in Crescent Heights. The building was built in 1930. I had said to my wife that it’s always cool when they open up coffee shops in historic old buildings. In Crescent there isn’t too much in the way of a place to get a great cup of coffee. The neighbourhood doesn’t have to wait any longer. They now have Sought & Found.

The pour-over had some excellent flavours. Sought x Found had 3 different blends they were doing pour-overs with. I tried the Nueva Linda, which is a Mexican blend they were featuring. Overall, the coffee was a sweet, smooth medium-bodied brew.

The London Fog was excellent, Sought x Found does something different that we haven’t seen at any other café. First off they don’t use any sweeteners in the drink, they garnish with Cardamom seeds on top, which adds something to the taste. My wife said the best London Fog she has ever had. My daughter had the Matcha and milk, said it was good but a little strong for her liking.

ZCREW Café

We just recently visited ZCREW Café, Zach and his team have done an outstanding job with ZCREW. We have now been here twice in the past few months and have been blown away with both our drinks as well as their food.

I ordered the large Hand Brew Pour Over – $8.00. It is brewed via the V60. I was extremely impressed with how smooth the drink was and how terrific the flavour was. There was absolutely no bitterness. They do have a small size if you choose for $5.00.

My wife ordered the London Fog – $5.50. This warm cup of tea was very aromatic and was wonderful to smell. Smooth with just the right amount of milk that didn’t overwhelm the tea itself. Fantastic.

My daughter ordered the Vanilla Latte – $5.50 There are many delicious ways to enjoy espresso, but one that couldn’t be more classic is the Vanilla Latte. The vanilla was very subtle in this drink which was really good.

My wife ordered the Make your own Waffle – $8.00, she added whip cream and fresh berries which cost an additional $1.50 per topping. They offer several topping choices.

My daughter had the Puffed Up Benny – $15.50. This isn’t your typical Eggs Benedict, instead of an English muffin, the eggs are perched on top of puff pastry, which adds a whole new dimension to the taste. It is served with a brown butter hollandaise. My daughter had hers with the ham and green apple, or you could choose it with smoked salmon and fresh dill.

I ordered the Korean Fried Chicken and Waffles – $19.00 I have had chicken and waffles at many places but this is my absolute favorite. The chicken was all white meat, and was plated with green onion waffles which I thought might take away from the dish but it actually enhanced the flavors. They serve this dish with gochugaru chili and chicken gravy and some pickled onions. I absolutely loved this dish. I truly can’t wait to go back and have this again.

Espresso Café

First thing I would like to say is Ali is the face of Espresso Café, he stops by and meets with customers. Every time we have been there, he stops by and chats for a while. He always wants to make sure things are top class.

Inside the cafe, there is a ton of seating. Lots of regular tables, and a very long high table in the middle of the cafe as you walk in. They have several large purple velvet couches to relax on over by the fireplace. Don’t let the purple velvet fool you, Espresso Café is beautifully decorated, sparing no expense and it shows, from the wallpaper to the lighting. Very tastefully decorated.

The coffee bar, outfitted with a great array of coffee gadgetry, beautiful pendant lamps which provide plenty of light for the baristas to make the nectar of the gods.

The service at Espresso Café was outstanding, staff were helpful and extremely friendly. We had even made a comment to our server and a few minutes later Ali, the manager, came over and addressed our concern. We ended up talking with him for about 30 minutes. The ownership group and managers are committed to making your experience at Espresso Café a memorable one.  The comments below are off their website, and based on what I have witnessed, they are walking the walk and talking the talk.

“Our mission will be to make best efforts to create an exclusive place where our customers will be able to socialize in a relaxing and comfortable environment as they enjoy the best brewed coffee or espresso in town.”

Vancouver

Our Town Café

In one of our most recent trips to Vancouver, we had the pleasure of checking out Our Town Café. What a great place!! The staff are amazing, drinks were to die for. I can’t wait to get back to Vancouver to go back to Our Town.

The interior of Our Town is very modern and spacious. Lots of huge windows, which is great for people watching. Lots of seating and yet lots of open space for moving around while you wait for your coffee. The place was immaculate.

At one point in time, I saw Drew the barista out fluffing pillows for the next guests to arrive. Rearranging bags of coffee beans on the shelves to make the display look better. Drew definitely has an eye for detail and takes pride in where he works.

The day we were there, we ordered the Vanilla Latte, a Chai Tea Latte and a Spanish Latte.

The drinks were all delicious, and I just wanted to say the Spanish Latte was the very best I had ever had. Steamed milk was very smooth and heated to the right temperature. I went with the Timbertrain espresso, which is a custom blend for Our Town and was an excellent choice if I do say so.

Olive + Ruby

Olive + Ruby is a little coffee oasis on West Broadway. I think the thing I like the most about this place is how pristine the décor is, white walls, with a planter wall and another wall is a huge mural. The other thing would be the four shot latte I had there. A great way to start your day.

Albeit not the biggest place, it is laid out very well with an entire wall of plants hanging down from the ceiling, and a huge painted feature wall on the other side of the shop.

The shop itself is very bright with lots of lighting and huge windows up front, where you can sit in 2 hanging wicker chairs, very cool. There is also lots of seating at the natural wood tables and one large communal table in the middle of the place that seats about 10 people.

Caramel latte -$5.75. I ordered the large Caramel Latte which was a pretty big drink, the the young lady serving me said, “Just so you know that there is 4 shots in it”, I responded with “that’s ok by me”. I thought the pricing was pretty good. The drink was very smooth, with a slight cocoa flavour mixed with the caramel. Overall the drink was very smooth and was well balanced considering there was 4 shots in it. I enjoyed this drink to the very last drop.

Laurence and Chico

This is the most unique coffee house we went to in 2018. There is nothing normal about this place. Lots of color, very unique seating areas, the bathrooms, what can I say but WOW!! Please take a look at the pictures. The drinks and food were very good as well. A definite must see when you are in Vancouver.

Not sure where I should start??? Wow is where. This space is the most unique and funky spot with the most amazing interior I have ever seen in a café. How do I put it? It’s where Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton come together. These guys’ artwork and fashion designs are way out there. I do however, applaud the imagination.

The cafe was filled with their inspiration – from chairs, tables, walls floors, to even the water closets and the peak-a-boo ceiling.

If you look at the artwork on the walls, you see eye balls everywhere. You see nothing but plant based characters. Totally crazy visuals and with so much attention to detail. I read that you will only see Laurence and Chico drawn in the human form, whereas their families and friends are drawn as animals, plants, fruits and vegetables. Even the mannequins are not normal, they are 7 feet tall and weird looking. (Alien if you will). This just adds to the senses.

As for the food, there was quite a selection of tiny sandwiches, desserts and pastries. All of the food looked really good. On this day we went with the Black Forest Mousse Tart and the Honey Bee Lemon Tart. The tarts were also very good and looked almost too good to eat. If I had one complaint, it would be that it was a little pricey. I think both tarts were about $5.50 each.

La Foret

When you arrive at this cafe, you don’t expect to see what you do walking in. This cafe is off the main street and it is an old garage turned amazing cafe. This cafe is really big and the use of space is amazing. If you are in Vancouver, I would definitely stop here.

The interior of this place is amazing with high ceilings and very modern décor. We showed up as they were just about to open so they let us roam around and really look at the space. We were expecting what we seen. Huge windows, large skylights and lots of seating. Did I mention the garden. They call it their forest (“Foret” means forest in France). Incredible.

As for the coffee, they offer Timbertrain as their day to day roaster of choice, which is one of my favourite roasters. It’s unfortunate that I can only get Timbertrain at one shop in Calgary. So when I am able to get it, I like to take advantage of it.

After seeing the pictures of their waffles, we decided to grab some breakfast while we were here. Decisions, decisions, what type of waffle to order.

We ordered a couple waffle platters and I ordered the Mango waffle platter, I also ordered a side of potatoes and a side of bacon.

Edmonton

Block 1912

On our last trip to Edmonton we wanted to find a new coffee shop that is very unique. We found it. Driving past you would not think that it is a coffee shop, you would probably think pub with the name Block 1912.

Walking into the coffee shop you would think you were in the past. The wall to your right is all exposed brick and the left has a nook of books. It was amazing. There was not that many people in there when we got there, but as we sat there more and more people started to show up.

After looking at the menu online and then arriving, their menus are different which was kind of sad since there was a drink on the online menu that we wanted to try and they couldn’t make it in store. We eventually decided on Vanilla Lattes and a Hot Chocolate.

They offered so many different food items including sorbet, pies, cheesecakes, soups, and sandwiches. We decided to not get food, but my daughter seen the Oreo Cheesecake and she had to have a piece. It was so delicious.

Coffee with a Cause

Kingdom Coffee Roasters (Calgary)

During the summer my family and I were at the Inglewood Night Market checking things out when we came across a guy selling coffee beans and sampling his coffee. We started talking with Jessie and was moved by his story. Jessie informed us that every Saturday he and a volunteer team of 20 or more head to the Drop In Centre and serve coffee and an assortment of food items. The time we volunteered we made 15 dozen cookies and there were other breakfast good available.

Jesse’s Story

From the drop to the dream

Four Pastors dressed up undercover and spent time with the homeless on the Streets of Calgary. There they meet a man named Jim.  He was addicted to heroin, crack cocaine and alcohol. Jim was at the end of his rope, fighting addiction, and contemplating suicide. The four pastors listened to Jim and showed him love. They brought him to a recovery center where Jesus found him and changed his life.  He went from being a violent, angry addict to a gentle man who his grandchildren ran to as he walked through the door. Jim passed away in December 2015 from a tragic work place accident.

We believe if a few men can love Jim, then we in turn can love other people who are struggling like he was. We share our coffee with people to hear their story and let them know someone is listening. A portion of every bag sold goes to helping people into recovery and finding them a place to sleep at night. We thank these four men for taking the time to love Jim.  Jim was my father and this is his story.

We believe this love can restore families. Like it restored ours.

Timber Coffee (Sylvan Lake, Alberta)

Out in Sylvan Lake there is a coffee house named Timber Coffee Co. The main reason I wanted to check this place out, is that it is a non-profit shop ran by Central Alberta Youth Unlimited.  I noticed that they had an indoor skateboard park inside the building along with more great space for kids to hang out and play games.

Outfitted in a one-story building shared with Central Alberta Youth Unlimited, Timber Coffee offers a spacious cafe with plenty of seating. After looking around, it appears the café is furnished by IKEA products. They have a wall of products and swag that are for sale that supports the youth organization. I did buy a nice ball cap, and my daughter bought a sweatshirt. As I made my way back to the washroom, I noticed that they had an indoor skateboard park inside the building along with more great space for kids to hang out and play games.

I tried a vanilla latte and was quite impressed. Their vanilla flavouring is made in house and is quite good. The baristas are talented and their latte art showed their skill. My wife had the London Fog and my daughter had the iced vanilla latte.  Both drinks also very good.

ZCREW Cafe

IMG_5197.jpg

We love our coffee, there is nothing like hanging out with friends and family, or just watching the weirdos walking down the street while enjoying a coffee.

In the past 4-5 years coffee has become its own culinary group. With coffee houses popping up everywhere with accompanying food menus and these menus are not just baked goods anymore. They are full menus featuring breakfast and lunch. ZCREW Cafe is such a place that has done both and is doing both very well.

The Interior

Overall ZCREW is not a big place but I do like the industrial feel with all the concrete, wood, and oversized lights. The high stools at the communal table weren’t the most comfortable, but we really enjoyed sitting at the communal table as we got to see what others were ordering and what the dishes looked like. We actually recognized people that we have seen on occasion at Sought X Found.

The Drinks

ZCREW Café has quite an extensive drink menu, featuring meticulously crafted pour overs, an assortment of handcrafted teas, including very creative signature drinks.

I ordered the large Hand Brew Pour Over – $8.00. It is brewed via the V60. I was extremely impressed with how smooth the drink was and how terrific the flavour was. There was absolutely no bitterness. They do have a small size if you choose for $5.00.

IMG_5207

My wife ordered the London Fog – $5.50. This warm cup of tea was very aromatic and was wonderful to smell. Smooth with just the right amount of milk that didn’t overwhelm the tea itself. Fantastic.

IMG_5208

My daughter ordered the Vanilla Latte – $5.50 There are many delicious ways to enjoy espresso, but one that couldn’t be more classic is the Vanilla Latte. The vanilla was very subtle in this drink which was really good.

IMG_5201

The Food

The first thing I would like to say about the food at ZCREW is that each dish is plated perfectly and looks absolutely amazing. I would like to say Kudos to the chefs, you do an amazing job.

My wife ordered the Make your own Waffle – $8.00, she added whip cream and fresh berries which cost an additional $1.50 per topping. They offer several topping choices.

IMG_5202

My daughter had the Puffed Up Benny – $15.50. This isn’t your typical Eggs Benedict, instead of an English muffin, the eggs are perched on top of puff pastry, which adds a whole new dimension to the taste. It is served with a brown butter hollandaise. My daughter had hers with the ham and green apple, or you could choose it with smoked salmon and fresh dill.

IMG_5203

I ordered the Korean Fried Chicken and Waffles – $19.00 I have had chicken and waffles at many places but this is my absolute favorite. The chicken was all white meat, and was plated with green onion waffles which I thought might take away from the dish but it actually enhanced the flavors. They serve this dish with gochugaru chili and chicken gravy and some pickled onions. I absolutely loved this dish. I truly can’t wait to go back and have this again.

IMG_5205

All of their ingredients are locally sourced from local suppliers like Community Natural Foods, Missing Link, Fiasco Gelato and Calgary Farmers Market. You don’t get much more local than that.

As we were waiting for our food, the person sitting across from us got his meal. He ordered the birds nest which looked absolutely delicious.
IMG_5199
For the vegan in your life, they have numerous options for them as well.

The Service

Overall the staff were terrific and great to deal with. The only real complaint I have is that I wish we would have received our drinks before our meals. Our drinks arrived shortly after we received our meals. It was very busy the day we were in there.

The Hours

Monday to Friday: 7:00am to 4:00pm

Saturday & Sunday: 9:00am to 4:00pm

Closed on all holidays

Parking

There is ample street parking.

Last Words

Maybe you need a quiet place to do some work and are desperate for a spot with ample outlets and available free Wi-Fi, a place to hang your purse under your table, or you just want to get out of the house and read a book. Whatever reason you need and are on the lookout for a new cafe, check out ZCREW Café in Calgary.

Ollia Macarons & Tea

IMG_4812

Today we were down on 17th Ave walking and we came across Ollia Macarons and Tea. We have been wanting to come down here for a while now to try their Macarons. Today was the day!

The Interior

It is quite small inside, there is a long counter at the back of the store where there is all the Macarons on display so you can see all of them. On the left side of the store front there is a bunch of items for sale. Overall this a very intimate store front.

The Drinks

We didn’t know that they had any kind of beverages for sale, but when we saw that they were making Matcha we decided to try some. Ollia uses the same Matcha as one of our favourite online tea souces, Tea Factory, so we were quite excited to have one. When we were watching them make the drinks, we realized that they were just using the same machine as we have at home. So it was a little disappointing. The drinks were not that great we could just make the same drinks at home we were surprised to say the least.

IMG_4820

The Food

Since they had macarons, I just had to get a couple. I got an Earl Grey, a Salted Caramel, a Cotton Candy, a Pistachio, a Sour Cherry, and a Vanilla. Some were delicious, but some of them really lacked flavour, unfortunately.

The Service

The staff that was there was very helpful and knowledgeable on their products. They were helpful in suggesting the different kinds of Macarons.

The Hours

Monday to Wednesday: 10:00am to 6:00pm

Thursday to Sunday: 10:00am to 8:00pm

Parking

There is street parking, but since there is a bunch of construction on 17th right now it is very difficult to find any parking.

Last Words

I would suggest just buying Macarons and no beverages if you head down to Ollia. The have holiday flavours of Macarons as well as their everyday flavours. The best part of their Macarons is that they are made fresh every day.

Nelson the Seagull

IMG_0837

When you enter a coffee house and see a line up, it generally means one of two things:

  1. The shop has made some poor choices and only have one barista working causing the issues
  2. There is lots of staff and they are working like a well-oiled machine meaning that not only is the coffee really good, but the food as well. If number two is true, I have no problem waiting.

We arrived at Nelson the Seagull on Monday morning to a full house, which was great to see considering it was a holiday.

The Interior

Nelson the Seagull is in a very old building down in Gastown. This place has a really cool vibe about it.

The shop had copious amount of seating, some small tables and a huge communal table that seats about 10-12 people. As I mentioned above, the place was full. We were fortunate to find a table. The chairs at the table reminded me of when I went to school, back in the day.

They have a huge bakery at the back of the shop where they bake all of their bread daily. I feel this adds a special uniqueness and if this is done well. It can be an added bonus to a shop.

The Food

Look up, look way up at the menu on the post, the menu goes up about 12’ up a post. Overall prices seem alright. Provided the food is good.

We ordered up some breakfast:

I ordered the Poached eggs on toast – $11.00 – 2 poached eggs on toast. It also came with a strawberry balsamic salad. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The toast is their house made sourdough bread. The sourdough was so good that I purchased a loaf of Walnut and Fig Sourdough to bring home to Calgary.

I also ordered a Cheese wheel pastry – $4.00 –  it too had great flavour, so good that I forgot to take a picture of it before I ate half of it. Here is what is left of it.

My son ordered the Avo(avocado) on toast – $9.00 –  fresh avocado on toast, it too tasted outstanding. We had a small mishap with the toast having butter on it as my son is a vegan and doesn’t eat butter. They fixed it up right away for him.

Check out the menu, I love the name of the sandwiches they serve.

The Drinks

Naturally, the quality of the coffee seems to have played a part in the cafe’s popularity. Slinging beans from great roasters like Elysian Coffee Roasters and Kafka’s Coffee Roasters.

We ordered the following drinks:

Flat white – $4.00

Latte – in house made almond milk $4.50

Both drinks tasted really good with some hints of wine to almost a bittersweet cocoa; overall very nice flavours.

The Service

Overall service was really good, everyone that I came in contact with were outstanding to deal with.

The ordering process was that you order your drinks and food, then listen for your name to be called to get your drinks. When your food is ready they basically walk around calling your name so they can find you.

The Hours

Monday to Friday: 8:00am to 5:00pm

Saturday & Sunday: 9:00am to 5:00pm

Parking

You are down in Gastown so parking is limited and is street parking.

Last Words

Looking back, I actually left Nelson the Seagull very relaxed despite how busy and loud it was inside the coffeehouse. All goes to show the power of good coffee. So if you find yourself in Gastown, go check this place out.

Bel Cafe – Kitsilano

One of my earlier stops that day was a place called Bel Café in downtown Vancouver. I had read that Bel Café had opened another location in Kitsilano. This place showed up as one of my coffee destinations while I was in Vancouver as another cool place to check out.

The Interior

While ambiance is not everything, it’s always welcome, especially when not expected.

My arrival at their sharply decorated store, a cafe full of large windows, nice colors and nice furniture with a cool large wrap around bench. The environment seems to convey confidence that this coffeehouse was no slouch.  (Albeit purely based on the notion, that if you have a stellar design, you must have amazing coffee to pay for it).

The Drinks

On my second stop of the day, I again decided to go off the beaten path and try something I had heard about that the Bel Café was trying out. I had been to Bel Café downtown earlier that morning and had a coffee. What is going on here?? They were also featuring 4 other drinks on their menu, so I decided to try something different again.

I ordered a Poached Pear Hot Chocolate – $5.00

First off, my wife and my daughter are huge hot chocolate fans so this is a drink I know that both of them would love. The flavour was unreal, the subtle taste of the pear mixes so well with the chocolate. I talked with the manager and she had said this was something they tried at a media event and were looking to put on their menu. If my opinion counts, please add to your menu. The drink was amazing and more people should try it.

They also sold assorted teas, jams, juices and kombucha.

Before I left, I picked up some Minor Figures oat milk for my son. It is pretty pricey at $9.50 for 1 litre but according to my son the oat milk was also amazing. Now, my challenge will be to try and find it in Calgary.

I forgot to mention that 49th Parallel is their roaster of choice.

IMG_0829

The Food

No food ordered today, but I was really impressed with how there food looked and if it is as good as it looks, I will be back to try some of their food items on my next visit.

The Service

I am happy to say the service at Bel Café – Kits was so much better than Bel Café downtown. Both ladies I dealt with were so friendly and very easy to talk to. They both answered all of my questions.

The lady, I believed to be the manager, was so accommodating not just with me but to all the other customers when they came in. I was happy to see that.

The Hours

Remembrance Day 10:00am to 5:00pm

Weekdays – Monday to Friday: 8am to 5pm

Weekends – Saturday & Sunday: 9am to 5pm

Parking

I got there when they opened so was able to find street parking right out front, but again, it was Remembrance Day.

Last Words

Overly pleased was my level of satisfaction with Bel Café – Kits and I couldn’t help but think how fortunate Kitsilano is to have such a stellar coffeehouse. Needless to say, stop at Bel Café Kits if you find yourself in Vancouver.

IMG_0833

Bel Café (Georgia Hotel)

IMG_0781

I literally set off in the wee morning hours on Remembrance Day trying to avoid waking up my son after he had a late night of gaming. Thus far, I’ve been fortunate in getting ready and not disturbing him too much. I have no problem sacrificing some precious sleep to go check out some more cool coffee shops. On Sunday, I was on a mission to head to Bel Café on West Georgia Street in the historic Hotel Georgia in Downtown Vancouver.

The Interior

First off, when you walk inside this old hotel, the décor is amazing. There is a mix of old and new in the lobby. When you go to enter the café through the door from the lobby, you are met by this single door with some huge windows around it. The café has a décor which has an old vibe with a modern flair that uses lots of wood, then throws in some more industrial pieces, and also incorporates lots of lighting.

The Drinks

I ordered a Black Sesame Latte – 8oz – $4.00

Today I went way out of my comfort zone and ordered a drink that my wife would normally order. I ordered the Black Sesame Latte. The drink contains: Japanese black sesame, honey, steamed milk, served in a double wall clear glass to show it off, which I thought was very smart. It had a very interesting flavour, with just a hint of sesame after each drink. There was a lady sitting next to me who ordered the Lavender Latte, again another very pretty drink, it has a nice purple/blue color to it.

Bel cafe has their coffee specially blended for them by 49th Parallel.

The Food

I ordered the Fruit Danish – $4.50

Plum, quark cheese, vanilla crumble. The Danish was outstanding. Very flaky, nice crumble on top, terrific flavours. I know what you are asking, “What is Quark Cheese?” that was my question, unfortunately the girl at the till could not tell me either.

The dictionary says it’s Farmers Cheese or a proper cheese, quark is drier and grainier than cream cheese but lighter. They say it makes a great cheesecake filling.

Plain quark tastes like a cross between Greek yoghurt and cottage cheese. No real surprise given its texture. High-fat varieties are very creamy and smooth, making them easy to enjoy on their own. Low-fat varieties on the other hand are very thick and firm, more like a spread.

The Service

Service was just ok. The girl working the till struggled with my questions. She really didn’t go out of her way to find me the answer either. This was unfortunate.

The Hours

Weekdays 6:30 am to 5:00 pm

Weekends 7:00 am to 5:00 pm

Parking

I found street parking but it was very early, it was Remembrance Day, and nobody was working downtown. A regular day would have been a different story.

Last Words

While I didn’t spend too much time at the café.  Altogether, it was a good stop at the Hotel Georgia and the Bel Cafe. It was a very relaxing atmosphere in this historic old hotel.

Elysian Coffee Roasters

IMG_0764

Just recently, I had the pleasure of trying out Elysian Coffee Roasters.  My son and I decided to head out for a late night beverage. So we headed down to their location at 590 West Broadway, Vancouver.

The Interior

As soon as you walk in, you see a small wall of coffee beans just waiting to be purchased. The coffee bar is actually quite large. There was plenty of seating with several large tables and a large window table. They also had a few tables and chairs out front on their patio.

The Drinks

The drinks we ordered were as follows:

Turmeric nut milk latte $5.00 – almond cashew milk (by Nuez) and a Chili turmeric blend (by Blume), the drink tasted great. My son really loved the nutmilk. I was actually quite impressed with the price considering it was made with nutmilk. It’s been interesting reading about how upset people are getting with having to pay more for the nutmilks. When will this controversy end??

Latte $4.75 – I went with the latte and considering I have never having tasted their wares, I was truly intrigued by the flavours of their Guatemala Florencia Espresso Blend. The milk’s texture was just right and at the right temperature. The espresso had a nice sweet taste to it. Overall I really enjoyed this drink.

Elysian Coffee does roast their own beans which lean towards a darker roast, by their beans on display.

The Food

No food tonight as we had just finished dinner. Also there was slim pickings to choose from as I would think it was getting close to closing time. The baked goods they did have looked inviting.

The Service

The service was good even though, the staff were not the most talkative pair. They were pleasant when they did talk.

The Hours

I really liked Elysian’s hours. It is always nice when you can go out for a beverage after dinner, far too many places close way too early.

Daily:  7:00am to 7:00pm

Parking

Street parking, what can I say, I was parked about a block away from their shop. It is a pretty busy area, so I wasn’t surprised by where I had to park.

Last Words

To put it simply, Elysian Coffee Roasters has satisfied my curiosities splendidly. They displayed decent latte art skills along with good coffee to make me one happy camper. I just wish I had given myself more time to check out their other locations. I will definitely find the time, the next time, I’m in Vancouver to visit.

Caffe La Tana

Needing a coffee stop on my way out on Saturday morning, I checked my coffee list for nearby coffeehouses and an intriguing place called Caffe La Tana showed up. I had not heard much of them except that they had just recently opened in October.

They are located at 635 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.

The Interior

First off, this is a very small place, but has huge old world charm, with its black-and-white checkerboard floor, earthy wallpaper, and a soft green colour scheme, as well as marble counters. I loved the fact that there was a guy there making fresh pasta by hand right in front of you. A well decorated shop goes a long way.

The whole shop only seats about 20 people. There is a small grocery store inside, selling such item as olive oils, tomato sauces, dried noodles and, of course, fresh pasta.

The Drinks

Unfortunately we had to get our drinks to go as the place was very busy and full. Café La Tana uses JJ Bean who does a custom blend just for them.

We ordered the following:

Americano – $3.50

Latte – $4.25

Both drinks were strong but very smooth to drink.

They also had fresh squeezed juice for sale. – $6.50 per bottle

The Food

The café offers a breakfast and lunch menu featuring pastries and assorted pasta dishes. I ordered the following:

Sfogliatella – $4.50, filled with ricotta, citrus and cinnamon, was very flaky and had terrific flavour. I would order this again if I was there again.

The also had an assortment baked goods including loaves of assorted breads. All looked delicious.

The Service

No issues to report, all the staff that we dealt with that day were excellent, and extremely friendly and knowledgeable.

The Hours

They are open daily 8:00am to 6:00pm.

Parking

There was minimal street parking around the shop.

Last Words

To put it bluntly, Caffé La Tana made for an excellent stop even for a to go cup of coffee, I would really like to go back and try some of their other food. . Not only was the coffee tasty but I was also able to spend some more quality time with my son. So if you find yourself on Commercial Drive in Vancouver stop by and check Caffé La Tana out.

Olive + Ruby

I never grow tired of discovering new coffee shops in Vancouver. It’s the one city that regardless of how often we visit, there’s always a new or rejuvenated shop to hit. It’s a never-ending coffee adventure.

On a rainy seasonal Friday morning, I got up quite early, took my early morning stroll to where I have to park on campus which is about 10 minutes away from my son’s apartment. I figured it was time to get some much needed coffee.

As I strolled West Broadway, I ended my brief journey at a little cafe called Olive + Ruby. The café is located at 2839 West Broadway in Vancouver.

The interior

Albeit not the biggest place, it is laid out very well with an entire wall of plants hanging down from the ceiling, and a huge painted feature wall on the other side of the shop.

The shop itself is very bright with lots of lighting and huge windows up front, where you can sit in 2 hanging wicker chairs, very cool. There is also lots of seating at the natural wood tables and one large communal table in the middle of the place that seats about 10 people.

On a nicer day they have a few tables to sit outside and take in the sights and sounds of West Broadway.

The Drinks

Caramel latte -$5.75. I ordered the large Caramel Latte which was a pretty big drink, the the young lady serving me said, “Just so you know that there is 4 shots in it”, I responded with “that’s ok by me”. I thought the pricing was pretty good. The drink was very smooth, with a slight cocoa flavour mixed with the caramel. Overall the drink was very smooth and was well balanced considering there was 4 shots in it. I enjoyed this drink to the very last drop.

Their roaster of choice is Pallet Coffee Roasters – They were serving the Benchmark blend, a Brazilian/Colombian espresso blend.

They also had a few other options on the menu with house made almond milk, a vegan caramel syrup, cardamom/vanilla syrup and oat milk. All the above were an extra cost.

They also had an assortment of kombucha from Hoochy Booch and assorted juices from Sexy Juice.

The Food

Breakfast croissant- $10.75 – Fried egg, white cheddar cheese, micro greens, sliced tomatoes, creamy Dijon on a croissant. This sandwich was terrific. Great flavours and I definitely enjoyed the creamy Dijon sauce on this sandwich, even though it was expensive, it was delicious.

Tropical Smoothie Bowl – $11.00 When I was getting ready to leave I ordered my son the Tropical Bliss Smoothie bowl. This thing was loaded with banana, pineapple, mango, orange, chia seeds, coconut flakes and coconut water.  My son told me the flavours were outstanding, It must have been good as he inhaled this bowl.

Lots of vegan options, all baked goods looked very good. They strive to make everything in house with real ingredients

The Service

The young lady I interacted with was very friendly. She was always doing something and was always smiling. Customer service was amazing.

The Hours

I was quite pleased with my experience at Olive + Ruby, I was now caffeinated up and ready to go, delivered my son his smoothie bowl, and once he finished, we ran some errands we needed to get down while I was visiting.

Olive + Ruby is a little coffee oasis on West Broadway, make sure you stop by for a great beverage and a nice relaxing visit.
